    Thanks, as an electronics engineer it is interesting to read about these mechanical things and try to bear (pun intended) them in mind.

    How do you mount your bearings? I often find that designing machines, I spend a lot of my time finding ways to properly constrain bearings. I would have thought that I could just find one good way and use it every time, but it seems like the situation always changes just enough so that I often have to come up with a different system. Making sure that the bearings are never over- or under-constrained, properly preloaded, and that there’s no contact between the retaining components and the inner and outer ring is always a big hassle for me.

      I agree that’s a common problem and I’ve gone through the same thing. If I’m using a padded bearing sometimes it’s easier to have mounting holes through other parts. Otherwise I generally have to have custom parts that are designed to encase the bearing, sometimes with a pressfit for the housing. If there’s a one size fits all solution I don’t know it, but I’d love to find out!

    Bearings are indeed essential parts for almost any kind of rotating machinery.

    Ball bearings for example, are used for high precision applications in a variety of markets, including aerospace, agriculture, construction, health, machine tool and general industry while rolling-element bearings have the advantage of a good tradeoff between cost, size, weight, carrying capacity, durability, accuracy, friction, and so on.
